I am a registered Learning Disability nurse by background. I have 20 years’ experience of working with people with mental and cognitive impairments and associated conditions. In
addition, I have over 7 years’ experience of assessing mental capacity in line with the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and associated guidance as part of the Local Authority and as part of my role with TSF Consultants.
I specialise in working with adults with learning disabilities and associated conditions including communication and behavioural difficulties. I also have experience of working with people who have Autism Spectrum Disorder and a dual diagnosis of Mental health and learning disabilities. In my work with the Local Authority I was frequently involved in assessing mental capacity for various decisions the main ones being decisions about care and accommodation arrangements.
In my current role, as a Specialist Mental Capacity Assessor, I have further developed my experience so that I am proficient at assessing mental capacity for a broad range of financial and legal decisions. These assessments have included; capacity to consent to care and accommodation arrangements (including Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards both in residential care settings and community settings) Testamentary capacity Capacity to manage property and finances Capacity to litigate Capacity to gift. I have also acted as certificate provider for Lasting Powers of Attorney and have been a witness in the creation of a Will. Safeguarding vulnerable people is integral to my current role and to who I am as a person. I am committed to empowering the individual I work with by using a person-centred approach to support them to be able to make decisions and speak up for themselves.
