I am a HCPC registered Occupational Therapist and have been since qualifying in 1988. This includes 26 years of experience working with service users with mental health issues, including
assessing mental capacity in line with the MCA (2005).
I have specialised in working with adults with mental health disorders, such as schizophrenia, bipolar affective disorder, depression, anxiety and dementia. In my NHS career I acted as Care
Coordinator under the Care Programme Approach and Section 117 of the Mental Health Act (1983). This frequently involved the assessment of mental capacity in order to produce reports for Mental Health Tribunals.
Since 2007 I have held a Senior lecturer/practitioner position at Glyndwr University training occupational therapy students, specialising in all aspects of mental health.
In my current role, as a Mental Capacity Assessor, I have further developed my experience so that I am proficient at assessing mental capacity for a broad range of financial and legal decisions. I have specialist skills in facilitating understanding and communication to maximise a person’s decision-making ability.
